360°
panoramic image showing the inner chamber of the Ggantija Temples located
near the small village of Xaghra, Gozo, Malta. It was a VERY hot
and sunny day, so once again there's quite a bit of over exposure. However,
this time I got a bit smarter and used
my hat to mask the direct sunlight on the curved lens. Once the EasyPano
software had stitched the 3 images together, it was an easy job to edit
out the unwanted hat image. This workaround for taking 360 images in
direct sunlight was posted in the EasyPano forum. It's not a perfect
solution, but I fully intend to use the "sunlight masking"
technique on more occasions.
The panoramic image opens with
a shot of my two German friends, Claus and Reichen from Bremen with whom I
shared a taxi ride from the ferry up to the Temples. This cost 12 euro,
which we split 3 ways. Claus and Reichen settled down in some shade to do
a series of watercolour paintings, which they showed me later on the ferry
returning to the main island. Nice couple, friends well met.
This panoramic shot was a much
better effort for controlling direct sunlight in to the lens, I think
there's still some improvement to be made, but my camera may be the
limiting factor. This is NOT a poor workman blaming his tools!
I wondered around the site for
a while taking a series of still photos and then walked a short distance
to the historic windmill located in the centre of the village.
The Ggantija Temples,
Xaghra, Gozo, Malta
Dry Description Snipped From
Wikipedia:
Ggantija (also Ggantia) is a megalithic temple complex on the Mediterranean island of Gozo (part of Malta). The two temples of Ggantija on the island of Gozo are notable for their gigantic Neolithic structures, which were erected during the Neolithic Age (c. 3600-2500 BC). At more than 5500 years old, the Ggantija temples are the world's oldest free-standing structures, and the world's oldest religious structures, pre-dating the Pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge. The temples were possibly the site of an Earth Mother Goddess Fertility Cult, with numerous figurines and statues found on site believed to be connected with that cult.
In the Maltese language, Ggantija means "belonging to the giants". According to local Gozitan legend, the temples were built by the giants who resided in Gozo during ancient times. It is said that the temples themselves were used by the giants as watchtowers.
The Ggantija Temples were excavated in 1827 by Col. John Otto Bayer, the Lieutenant Governor of Gozo.
However, after his departure from Gozo, the temples were not properly maintained and soon filled with rubbish. It was only until after the Ggantija temples were made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980, that proper restoration occurred.
