After a summer
of dull cloudy days (ideal for 360 photography), I just had to pick
probably the most sunniest day to roll out the camera!
The Major Oak is a huge Oak tree near the village of Edwinstowe in the heart of Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire, England. According to local folklore, it was Robin Hood's headquarters.
It weighs an estimated 23 tons, has a waistline of 33 feet, and is about 800-1000 years old.
Since the Victorian era its massive limbs have been partially supported by an elaborate system of scaffolding. In February 1998, a local company took cuttings from the Major Oak and began cultivating clones of the famous tree with the intention of sending saplings to be planted in major cities around the world.
In 1998 a local Mansfield resident was cautioned by the Nottinghamshire Police for selling alleged Major Oak acorns (including a certificate of authenticity) to unsuspecting Americans via an Internet based mail-order company.

The Diary of Planting a New Oak Wood at Bear Mead, Dorset, England
(A plantation of 318 trees on 7
acres of pasture, with:
258 major oaklets, 11 major oaklet spares,
29 willow, 8 ash, 4 chestnut, 3 birch, 3 spindle, 1 aspen and 1 rowan)
There is a chap living in Dorset who "had a dream" back in 1996. He and his wife got the acorns in 2000, "collected" the acorns from England's most famous tree
(I assume it was the Major Oak) in Sherwood Forest at midnight, and grew them in pots in their back garden at home in Dorset.
For the last 7 years they have been working hard to make their land support a variety of trees and plants.
This is a truly inspired project and puts my efforts to shame.
Good STUFF, well done!
