Wonderful Windsor Home of Kings and Queens of England PDF Print E-mail
Written by The Laughing Camel

Since the Norman Kings built their defences here it has been the home of Kings and Queens of England. For some, including Charles1, HenryV111 and Jane Seymour, it is their final resting place. Windsor Castle is the oldest castle residence still in use today.

The town is situated 21 miles (34 km) west of Charing Cross. It is immediately south of the River Thames, which forms its boundary with Eton.

Windsor is a popular tourist destination and location of Windsor Castle, one of the official residences of the British Royal Family. The castle was originally established by King William I of England but has been substantially altered and added to over the centuries.

As a result of the royal residence Windsor has facilities usually found in larger towns: two railway stations, a theatre and several substantial hotels. The town is also the location of Legoland, built on the site of Windsor Safari Park. On construction, several tons of hippo dung had to be removed from the enclosure used by the animals.

Getting there:

The M6 is only a few miles from Windsor and this gives easy access via the M25 for Londoners and an almost clear right through to Livepool going nothbound M6.

Heathrow Airport is just a few miles away, so international travellers can easily include Windsor on their places to visit list.Along with the several financial benefits that London Pass Travel provides, users of the facility definitely vouch for the peace of mind that it gives at every step on their journey to the majestic city of London. For those uninitiated, the London Pass is a prepaid card which provides entry to the tourist spots of London. Winsor Castle is included in the Pass, so why not use it as an excuse to visit Windsor and all of its tourist venues.

Visiting Windsor, England, When Her Majesty the Queen is in Residence the Royal Standard is Raised By : Ann Coveney    zero times read

The majestic stag stands watching over his harem of females looking out for their safety. The silence is shattered with the sound of horse's hooves crashing through the trees. The deer are startled and run. The Royal Hunt is afoot with the hunt master William the Conqueror at its head. The time is the eleventh century and the place is Windlesora - known today as Windsor.

Since the Norman Kings built their defences here it has been the home of Kings and Queens of England. For some, including Charles1, HenryV111 and Jane Seymour, it is their final resting place.
Windsor Castle is the oldest castle residence still in use today. When Her Majesty the Queen is in residence the Royal Standard is raised. When she is out of town the Union Jack is hoisted.

Parts of the castle are open to the public including:-

Queen Mary's Dolls House
This remarkable labour of love was made for Queen Mary in 1924. Everything in the house works - even the plumbing. Many famous people contributed to the design and articles within. The library contains original leather-bound books. The cars in the garage can run 20,000 miles to the gallon. You wonder if a child ever played with this masterpiece!

Eton College
About a mile north from Windsor Castle is the famous Eton College founded by HenryV1 in1440. Originally built to educate poor students it is one of the most exclusive schools in the world. Lists of past and present pupils read like a who's who of people that have shaped and will continue to shape the world we live in.

Guildhall
Sir Thomas Fitz originally designed the building but died before its completion. Famous architect Sir Christopher Wren continued his work and completed it in 1689. From here you can watch the changing of the guards passing by complete with red tunics and bearskins. Inside you can view a collection of royal portraits dating back to Elizabeth 1. and a series of dioramas depicting historical events and places.
Interestingly, the columns, which seem to be supporting the roof of this building, actually carry no weight at all. More recently pictures of the Guildhall were beamed around the world, as this was the venue for the civil wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles.

The Cavalry Museum
Anyone with an interest in all things military will be delighted with this collection. Exhibits date from the seventeenth century to the present day including armour weaponry and battle models.

Windsor Great Park
'The Long Walk', 'Savill Gardens' and 'Virginia Water' are highlights of this huge park covering 4800 acres. The Long Walk covers a distance of 3 miles from the castle to the statue of George 111 on horseback. Savill Gardens offers you a spectacular array of plants and flowers all year round. You can stop and buy your favourite plant or have a bite to eat in the restaurant. Towards the south is Virginia Water - a large lake surrounded by beautiful gardens and sprawling lawns. Look out for some curiosities including a 100 foot totem pole.

A visit to Royal Windsor will take you on a journey back through one thousand years of English history and tradition. This is a place that continues to inspire and excite the imagination. If visiting Royal Windsor has left you with a thirst to know more then a trip of six miles will take you to Runnymede where the Magna Carta was signed laying down the foundations of our present day democracies.

Windsor is also the headquarters of Morgan Crucible http://www.morgancrucible.com , probably the most successful engineering company in the world. Their Technical Ceramics and Carbon divisions provide a wide range of materials, products and services to customers from around the world.

Windsor Castle Visiting Touring

Eaton

Crossing the bridge at the end of Thames Avenue in Windsor town brings you to Eton , a one-street village lined with bookshops and antique dealers, but famous all over the world for Eton College , a ten-minute walk from the river. When the school was founded in 1440, its aim was to give free education to seventy poor scholars and choristers; how times have changed.

The original fifteenth-century schoolroom , gnarled with centuries of graffiti, survives , but the real highlight is the College Chapel , completed in 1482, a wonderful example of English Perpendicular architecture.

The self-congratulatory Museum of Eton Life is well worth visiting if you have a fascination with flogging, fagging and bragging about the school's facilities and alumni.

Along with the several financial benefits that London Pass Travel provides, users of the facility definitely vouch for the peace of mind that it gives at every step on their journey to the majestic city of London. For those uninitiated, the London Pass is a prepaid card which provides entry to the tourist spots of London, and comes with several attractive features related to travel, visiting places of recreation and food. Thus the London Pass Travel is generally purchased as a package, it does create hefty savings for the tourist on the travel.

One of the most time consuming and even tiring things in foreign travel is the decision-making that one needs to do at every step of the travel. Tourists generally know the names of the places of interest in foreign places, but they would not know how far they are located. Maps are available wherever, but they are not as good as an itinerary, which only an experienced voyager facility can provide. With The London Pass Travel, tourists get a 160-page travel handbook on London free, which contains extremely detailed information on how to go about travelling in London. There are suggestions on itineraries too. This is certainly a big boon for the travellers who can then chalk out their travel plans accordingly and make the best use of their vacations.

The London Travel Pass also provides prepaid travel within all the six zones of the city and even outside to few places like the Windsor Castle. Since, there is no need of keeping loose change all the time. The travel is prepaid for most public utilities like underground buses, rails and trams.

London Pass Travel is a prepaid holiday, and we know what that means. There is no want to carry more cash, and that indeed adds to the safety of the person. In foreign countries, people certainly have qualms in carrying cash. This problem is resolved with London Pass Travel.

Again, at every meal of the travel, tourists want to spend a lot of time deciding where to eat and what to eat. They might like trying out the cuisine at certain places, but the prices might scare them off. However, a person who opts for London Pass Travel does not have to face this hardness much. The card is collaborated with many hotels and eating places, who give heavy discounts to the holders of the London Pass. Due to this, the pass holders do not need to worry about eating in most of the places.

In conclusion, London Pass Travel makes the travel much simpler for the tourist, since enabling them to relish the holiday more. That is the reason why it has become so popular among tourists in recent times.
